Grace King was the third child and eldest daughter of William Woodson King, a prosperous New Orleans attorney, and Sarah Ann Miller King. Impoverished by the Civil War, Grace King lived in New Orleans for the remainder of her life with her mother, brother, and two unmarried sisters, although she was able to travel in the United States and Europe and cultivated relationships with notables in the worlds of writing and publishing.
